In a bold declaration, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, asserted on Monday that his party is poised for a significant transformation in 2024, positioning itself as Nigeria’s primary opposition force.

In his New Year Message, Obi expressed the LP’s unwavering commitment to holding the ruling All-Progressives Congress (APC) accountable, pledging to safeguard the interests of Nigerians.

As the former Governor of Anambra State, Obi emphasized the need for a new Nigeria, acknowledging the country’s untapped potential and the persistent lack of effective leadership. He conveyed warm New Year greetings to all Nigerians, invoking blessings for a prosperous year ahead.

Reflecting on the challenges of the past year, Obi underscored the nation’s struggle for peace and security, condemning the alarming levels of violence and bloodshed. He called on the Federal Government to take decisive actions to bring perpetrators to justice and prevent further occurrences.

Addressing economic concerns, Obi highlighted the pressing issues of rising unemployment, inflation, poverty, and inequality. He stressed the urgent need for good governance, inclusive development, and accountable leadership in a functional democracy.

Identifying a fundamental threat to democracy, Obi emphasized the importance of preserving national institutions and preventing the undue influence of a select few in state affairs. He called for a respect for the separation of powers and urged the National Assembly to diligently fulfill its functions, particularly in scrutinizing the 2024 budget.

Expressing concern about potential drift towards a one-party state, Obi asserted the Labour Party’s commitment to opposition politics. He thanked supporters of his 2023 election campaign and affirmed the party’s dedication to ongoing discussions and efforts to adapt to its new role as Nigeria’s main opposition.

While acknowledging the contested outcome of the 2023 presidential elections, Obi recognized the decisions of the courts and expressed gratitude to party members, friends, and well-wishers for their loyalty and commitment to democracy. He concluded with a passionate call for all those striving for a new Nigeria to remain engaged and resilient in the pursuit of a brighter future for the nation.
