Renowned Nigerian journalist, Umar Audu, who recently uncovered a fake results syndicate in Benin Republic, has voiced concerns about his safety, prompting friends and family to worry about potential threats.

Despite currently feeling secure, Audu remains uncertain about the future, urging authorities to prioritize his protection as he sheds light on a fraudulent academic scheme operating in Togo and Benin Republic.

Audu gained widespread recognition for his investigative report, revealing how he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in just six weeks from Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies, Cotonou, Benin Republic. Shockingly, he detailed the process of acquiring the degree without attending lectures, coursework, or even setting foot in the country. The certificate obtained through this dubious means was subsequently used for participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The repercussions of Audu’s exposé prompted the federal government to ban the evaluation of results from Benin Republic and Togo, launching a comprehensive investigation into the entire fraudulent operation. Speaking with Channels Television on Wednesday, Audu acknowledged the absence of direct threats but highlighted the genuine worry from his family members. He emphasized the need for journalists to carry out their work without fear or intimidation in a society that values freedom of the press.

“I believe I should be allowed to carry out my job without any threats or intimidation. This situation highlights the type of society we live in, where journalists should be able to conduct their work peacefully and be assured of their safety,” Audu stated.

He called on the authorities to ensure his protection, emphasizing that, despite being in a safe place currently, the unpredictable nature of the situation necessitates vigilance. Audu expressed hope that the government remains alert and pledged to promptly seek their assistance if any threats arise, ensuring he receives the necessary protection to continue his journalistic pursuits.
