Former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, opened up about the challenging experiences he faced during the Nigerian Civil War, expressing the discomfort of fighting against former classmates and colleagues on the opposite side.

In a recent interview with Search FM in Minna, he shared that while the war was not a pleasant chapter, it was a necessary effort to unite the country.

Babangida acknowledged the unique sadness of a civil war, recounting the difficult scenario where individuals who once shared friendships and common backgrounds found themselves in opposing forces. Despite the discomfort, he emphasized the importance of the war in preserving the unity of the nation.

Reflecting on his career path, Babangida mentioned that if he hadn’t pursued a military career, he would have become a civil engineer. He highlighted one of his proudest achievements as serving the country to the best of his ability.

“I served the country the best I could, it may not be to your satisfaction, but to the best that I could. I leave that to history to judge, and I related fairly well with the people of the country,” Babangida stated. He added that his extensive travels allowed him to understand the diverse aspects of the nation, making friends throughout and considering it one of his greatest achievements.

In conclusion, General Ibrahim Babangida expressed hope that the painful experiences of a civil war would never be repeated in the country’s history.
