Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara officially acknowledges Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaehwule as the legitimate Speaker of the House of Assembly, putting an end to months of intense political strife.
The rift, primarily driven by escalating tensions between Fubara and his predecessor, former Governor Nyesom Wike, reached a boiling point last year when Amaehwule, a dedicated Wike loyalist, initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor.
In response, Fubara adamantly refused to acknowledge Amaehwule’s speakership, resorting to legal action against him and 26 other lawmakers who had defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All-Progressives Congress (APC).
The political landscape took an unexpected turn following an intervention by President Bola Tinubu, resulting in the withdrawal of the impeachment proceedings. This recent development signifies a potential shift towards reconciliation and political stability in Rivers State.
