During his recent visit to Nsukka, Enugu state, as part of his campaign activities for the 2023 presidential election, Labour party candidate Peter Obi unveiled the distressing reality faced by a former university mate turned professor.

Using his X handle to share the encounter, Obi detailed how his planned assignments took an unexpected turn when he encountered an old friend who had once been a bright and accomplished fellow during their university days in the 80s.

Obi’s primary mission in Nsukka was twofold – to assess a dilapidated health center and to support the campaign of Hon Dennis Agbo, a federal legislator contesting the Udenu/Igbo Eze North Federal Constituency bye-election. Expressing confidence in Agbo’s dedication to public service, Obi highlighted the legislator’s commitment to the well-being of his constituents.

However, the unexpected emotional encounter with his university mate, now a professor in the same institution, unveiled a disheartening tale. Despite achieving academic excellence and reaching the pinnacle of his career, the professor narrated a grim story of stagnant remuneration. His salary, frozen since January 31, 2010, has not seen any increase over the past 14 years, leaving him struggling to make ends meet.

The professor, visibly distressed, reminisced about the past when his earnings had tangible value, allowing him to afford a Toyota Corolla. Today, the same salary of approximately N400,000 holds significantly less purchasing power, rendering such luxuries out of reach. The once proud professor, now grappling with the harsh economic realities, made a poignant request to Obi – to advocate on his behalf so that, if elected, Hon Dennis Agbo could appoint him as a Special Adviser.

This encounter sheds light on the challenges faced by seasoned academics, emphasizing the need for attention and reform in the education sector to ensure the well-being of those who contribute significantly to the nation’s intellectual capital.
