In response to accusations leveled by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party has urged President Bola Tinubu and the APC to confront the consequences of their failed policies rather than attempting to shift blame onto opposition parties.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, dismissed claims made by the APC, stating that the recent protests in major cities across the nation are a direct result of the ruling party’s ineffective governance.
The APC had earlier accused opposition parties of orchestrating the protests, citing demonstrations in Minna and Kano as evidence of opposition interference.
Protests erupted on Monday in Minna, the capital of Niger State, and in Kano, driven by grievances over the soaring cost of living.
However, in a swift response, the Labour Party refuted the APC’s accusations, asserting that blaming opposition parties ignores the genuine hardships faced by ordinary citizens, including APC members themselves.
The Labour Party spokesperson emphasized the need for the ruling party to address the economic challenges it has contributed to, rather than engaging in propagandist tactics.
“It is evident to every discerning Nigerian that the APC is responsible for instigating and sustaining sponsored protests,” the spokesperson remarked. “To suggest that Nigerians protesting against the dire consequences of this administration’s policy failures are mere pawns of opposition parties is ludicrous.”
“The individuals who took to the streets in Minna, a state under APC control, did so not as members of opposition parties, but as citizens suffering from the consequences of this administration’s incompetence and lack of preparedness for governance,” the spokesperson continued.
“Regardless of political affiliations, religion, or ethnicity, we all bear witness to the skyrocketing prices of goods and services in the market. Parents are struggling to pay their children’s school fees, and the Federal Government’s failure to disburse January salaries further exacerbates the situation.”
“In light of these challenges, our advice to the APC is to focus on finding solutions to Nigeria’s economic woes, which it played a significant role in creating, rather than perpetuating propaganda,” the spokesperson concluded.
