Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho emerged as the hero on Wednesday night, securing his team’s place in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Final by calmly converting the match-winning penalty against South Africa.

Entering the game during extra time, Iheanacho made an immediate impact by confidently slotting home the decisive penalty in the shootout, propelling Nigeria past South Africa and into Sunday’s final showdown.

The tightly contested match saw William Troost-Ekong breaking the deadlock for Nigeria with a goal from the penalty spot, but South Africa clawed back with a late equalizer, forcing the game into extra time.

Iheanacho, introduced as a substitute in extra time, wasted no time in leaving his mark on the game, stepping up to convert the crucial penalty that sealed Nigeria’s victory.

Nigeria will now prepare to face Ivory Coast in the AFCON Final, with hopes of clinching their fourth title in the tournament’s history.

The Super Eagles’ triumph comes after a nail-biting encounter in Bouake, characterized by the resilience of both teams. Nigeria’s coach, Jose Peseiro, praised his team’s fighting spirit, highlighting their determination and unity.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, lamented the cruel nature of football, acknowledging his team’s valiant effort despite the heartbreaking loss.

Iheanacho, who had been a peripheral figure throughout the tournament, emerged as the hero of the night, converting the decisive penalty that propelled Nigeria into the final.

The goalkeeper, Nwabali, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey, saving crucial penalties during the shootout and proving to be a reliable presence between the posts.

Peseiro’s decision to field Nwabali over Francis Uzoho paid off, with the goalkeeper delivering consistent performances throughout the tournament.

As Nigeria sets its sights on the final showdown, Iheanacho’s heroics have undoubtedly lifted the spirits of the team and their supporters, as they aim to reclaim glory on the African stage.
