A crowd in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, has reportedly burned brooms, the official symbol of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in an apparent show of anger, rejection against the ruling party in the state.
The incident is particularly striking because it comes shortly after APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda represented President Bola Tinubu at a road project launch in Akwanga.
A video circulating widely shows a large crowd gathered around a fire under trees, with several people holding brooms before throwing them into the flames.
The footage carries a claim that the APC and President Tinubu have been rejected both at home and away. A Dawisu watermark is visible on the video.
The incident has revived memories of an earlier protest in Akwanga in 2026, when supporters of former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu reportedly set APC symbols on fire after the party’s governorship primaries produced Senator Aliyu Wadada as its candidate.
Party officials dismissed those protests as political theatre, saying they would not erase government projects in the state.
The latest display comes amid wider concerns over high fuel and food prices, insecurity and the falling buying power of ordinary Nigerians.
The burning of the broom has now become a highly visible political statement as opposition groups position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
Whether the protest reflects wider public anger in Nasarawa remains a question for voters to answer. The real test will come at polling units when Nigerians decide who they want to govern them in 2027.
