Against all odds, Ivory Coast emerged victorious as the champions of the Africa Cup of Nations, despite facing significant challenges throughout the tournament, including a precarious group stage and the dismissal of their head coach.

Initially, the tournament hosts found themselves on the brink of elimination after suffering defeats in two of their first three matches. Their advancement to the knockout stage was secured by the narrowest of margins, clinching the final spot as the best third-placed team.

Following their group stage ordeal, head coach Jean-Louis Gasset was relieved of his duties. However, Ivory Coast rallied under interim leadership, staging remarkable performances in the knockout rounds.

Their journey to the final was marked by hard-fought victories, including a tense penalty shootout win against Senegal, an extra-time triumph over Mali, and a decisive victory against DR Congo.

In the final showdown against Nigeria on Sunday night, Ivory Coast faced an early setback with William Troost-Ekong’s header putting them at a disadvantage in the first half. Yet, their resilience shone through as Franck Kessie’s equalizing header after the break leveled the score.

Ultimately, Ivory Coast emerged triumphant with a 2-1 victory over Nigeria, securing their status as the Africa Cup of Nations champions and demonstrating their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
