Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, has sounded a warning about the administration of President Bola Tinubu, likening it to a sinking ship.
In an interview with Arise TV, Yusuf expressed deep concern over the silence from the South-Eastern region amid the ongoing hardship faced under Tinubu’s rule.
Yusuf articulated, “The unusual quietness from the South-Easterners is troubling. Tinubu’s economic policies have exacerbated the situation, leaving many in dire straits and signaling imminent trouble.”
Accusing Tinubu of jeopardizing the stability of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Yusuf highlighted Tinubu’s decision to unilaterally cut off electricity to the Republic of Niger following a recent coup in the country as a deliberate attempt to undermine the regional body.
He criticized Tinubu’s mishandling of negotiations with Niger Republic post-coup, particularly citing Tinubu’s imposition of sanctions and aggressive military actions as counterproductive measures. Yusuf stressed the necessity of consultation in such matters, noting Tinubu’s failure to engage in dialogue before resorting to drastic actions.
Yusuf also emphasized the fraternal bonds between northern Nigerian communities and those in Niger Republic, underscoring the historical significance of ECOWAS and lamenting Tinubu’s actions as detrimental to decades of regional cooperation.
“In just nine months, Tinubu has undone what took 49 years to build, due to his lack of consultation and overbearing hubris,” concluded Yusuf.
