Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has heavily criticized the policies of the Bola Tinubu administration, attributing them to ongoing hardships faced by Nigerians.
Expressing his concerns on Sunday through his official social media handle, Atiku, who ran for the presidency under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) banner in 2023, lamented the lack of effective measures presented by Tinubu during a recent meeting with state governors in Abuja.
Atiku pointed out that despite the pressing issues of currency fluctuation and poverty plaguing the nation, Tinubu’s administration failed to showcase tangible policy steps to address these crises.
He criticized Tinubu’s government for what he termed a “poverty of ideas” in handling the economic challenges and for disregarding input from experts offering solutions.
“During Thursday’s meeting convened to address the Foreign Exchange crisis and economic downturn, Bola Tinubu failed to present any concrete policy steps to tackle currency fluctuation and poverty,” Atiku stated.
He expressed disagreement with Tinubu’s plea for more time to implement strategies, arguing that the current administration’s policies have exacerbated economic hardships.
Atiku emphasized that he had previously offered policy recommendations to avert the current economic predicament, encapsulated in his document titled “My Covenant With Nigeria.”
Highlighting the hurried implementation of Tinubu’s foreign exchange management policy without adequate consultation, Atiku criticized the government for failing to anticipate negative consequences.
He particularly criticized the lack of independence given to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in designing and implementing a comprehensive FX Management Policy.
Atiku concluded by urging the government to heed sound counsel and address internal issues like corruption and poorly negotiated foreign loans to stabilize the economy.
