Renowned Islamic cleric Sheik Ahmad Gumi has raised questions about the legitimacy of the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to designate individuals as terrorists.

This comes after the release of alleged “terrorist financiers” on Tuesday, sparking controversy and doubts about the credibility of such declarations.

President Tinubu himself has faced allegations, with reports suggesting involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering during his time in the United States. Recent revelations from Chicago State University have further fueled skepticism, exposing discrepancies in the authenticity of Tinubu’s academic credentials.

In the midst of these revelations, the Nigerian government, through The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), uncovered 15 entities suspected of financing terrorist activities within the country. Notably, among those listed was Tukur Mamu, a Kaduna-based publisher known to have ties with Sheik Ahmad Gumi, currently undergoing trial for allegedly aiding terrorists responsible for the Abuja-Kaduna train attack in March 2022.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Media Aide, Bashir Ahmad, disclosed the names of individuals and businesses implicated in financing terrorism, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring legal repercussions for their actions.

However, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, speaking at an event organized by Daily Trust, cautioned against preemptive judgments, particularly through media trials. He highlighted Mamu’s ongoing court case, urging patience for the judicial process to determine his guilt or innocence.

Gumi questioned the authority of security agencies to declare individuals as terrorist financiers, asserting that such determinations should rest with the courts. He emphasized the importance of due process and fair trials, urging for evidence-based proceedings rather than relying on media speculations.

As a public figure, Gumi acknowledged his interactions with various individuals, including those with questionable backgrounds. Drawing parallels with pastors who counsel even confessed criminals, he advocated for the principle of innocent until proven guilty, reiterating the need for proper legal proceedings in Mamu’s case.

In light of the complexities surrounding Mamu’s arrest, Gumi emphasized the importance of a just and transparent legal process. While expressing hope for a fair trial, he underscored the significance of presenting concrete evidence and allowing the court to deliver a verdict based on facts.

Overall, Sheik Ahmad Gumi’s remarks underscored the importance of upholding the principles of justice and due process, particularly in cases with significant public scrutiny and implications.
