Following the conclusion of Mr. Julius Abure’s leadership term as head of the National Working Committee, the Labour Party’s Board of Trustees has assumed control of the party to ensure continuity and prevent leadership vacuums.

This decisive action, disclosed in a press release dated March 27, 2024, is in line with the Labour Party Constitution and stems from consultations with crucial stakeholders.

The Board’s move is in compliance with a Federal High Court consent judgment issued on March 20, 2018, by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, which affirmed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as the rightful custodians of the Labour Party and mandated the organization of a comprehensive National Convention.

This decision also follows a 2022 agreement brokered between the former National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), facilitated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor, commended the unwavering commitment of Labour Party members, spanning workers, Obidents, students, youths, market traders, and candidates, to the party’s core principles. He assured stakeholders of the Board’s dedication to promptly initiate the process for an all-inclusive National Convention.

In contrast to recent events in Nnewi, the Board pledges a transparent approach beginning with grassroots congresses at various levels. This methodology aims to engage all genuine Labour Party members and will be executed openly under the scrutiny of relevant authorities and media.

The statement further acknowledged the non-endorsement of the party event in Nnewi by Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party leader, and other key stakeholders, underscoring a commitment to addressing any misconduct within the party ranks.

Concluding the statement, Comrade Ejiofor reiterated the Board’s resolve to rejuvenate and reposition the Labour Party as a catalyst for Nigeria’s socio-political progress and the betterment of its citizens.
