The Labour Party (LP), the Northern Caucus, led by Hussaini Saraki, is advocating for the national chairmanship position to be allocated to the North.
Saraki emphasized the importance of inclusivity and fairness, stating that only a Northern candidate should assume the party’s leadership role.
During a press briefing in Bauchi State, Saraki reiterated the Northern stance against factionalism, emphasizing their commitment to a united Labour Party. He emphasized that the presidency being held by a Southern candidate should be balanced with the chairmanship being from the North.
The LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, noted the party’s progress beyond the controversy surrounding the national chairman role, asserting that unity efforts were underway, even within Saraki’s circles.
The incumbent national chairman, Julius Abure, hails from the South South region, which has sparked debate within the party. Abure’s reelection during the LP’s recent national convention in Anambra State was met with disapproval by some factions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which deemed the convention unlawful.
In response to the NLC’s concerns, a transition committee was established to oversee the party’s affairs until a comprehensive national convention could be arranged, aiming to address the grievances and restore unity within the LP.
