The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and the Southwest Commodity Farmers Organization have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

This agreement paves the way for cattle breeders to rear their cows within the zone.

The peace pact was signed during a summit in Ibadan, marking a new chapter in farmer-herder relations.

Olusegun Dasaolu, the coordinator of the Southwest farmers organization, explained that the MoU represents a commitment from both herders and farmers to work together. The goal is to boost food production and ensure sustainability not just in the Southwest, but across Nigeria.

Dasaolu emphasized that the agreement also mandates both parties to identify authentic herders and farmers. This step is crucial in addressing the challenges they face in the region.

He further elaborated, “The MoU with cattle breeders signifies that farmers in the Southwest and herders have pledged to collaborate for the unity of farmers and the advancement of agriculture. This will lead to peaceful resolution of conflicts. Our immediate plan is to identify the genuine herders and farmers in the Southwest, and we have agreed to foster better connections.”

He added that this agreement would significantly alleviate the food crisis. With a sense of security restored, farmers can return to their farms, leading to an increase in agricultural production. This progress aligns with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Othman Ngelzarma, the National Chairman of Miyetti Allah, viewed the event as a chance to strategize for the security of both farmers and herders in the region. He believes that a united front of farmers and herders in the Southwest can effectively identify and address any issues within the pastoralist communities.

Abimbola Akeredolu, the Southwest Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, called for the continued use of technological solutions in agriculture. This approach would provide support to farmers and enhance food production.
