Emeka Ihedioha, the ex-Governor of Imo State, has announced his departure from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This was made public in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Mbutu Ward, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday.
Ihedioha, a party member since its establishment in 1998, has made significant contributions to the party’s development and evolution. However, he noted that his personal convictions and the party’s current direction have increasingly diverged in recent times.
The former Governor expressed disappointment over the PDP’s recent shifts, stating that the party has strayed from its fundamental principles. He also voiced concerns about the party’s failure to implement internal reforms, maintain its regulations, and effectively counter the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Despite his decision to leave the PDP, Ihedioha affirmed his commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in the country.
In his letter, he stated, “Unfortunately, the party has recently embarked on a path that conflicts with my personal beliefs. Despite my efforts to advise, the party is no longer capable of implementing internal reforms, enforcing its own rules, or providing a credible challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress.”
“Given these circumstances, I feel compelled to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect. While it was a difficult decision to make, I believe it is the correct one. Despite my resignation, I remain committed to contributing to the enhancement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
