Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State led a delegation of nine northern governors to a security symposium in the U.S., organized by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).
The three-day event, which began on April 23 and ends on April 25, is being attended by governors from Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Plateau states, all of which are grappling with security challenges.
The symposium aims to address the root causes of insecurity in Northern Nigeria by developing comprehensive solutions. According to Governor Yusuf’s media director, Sunusi Bature, the intensive executive engagement will enable the governors to gain a deep understanding of the dynamics of security threats, their socioeconomic dimensions, and near-term opportunities to drive stability in Northern Nigeria.
The US Institute of Peace will also broaden knowledge on strengthening conflict prevention in the region, through non-violent strategies for engaging armed groups as an alternative for conflict resolution. The strategic engagement, anchored under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Sany, Vice President, Africa Center for US Institute of Peace, will also focus on policy coordination and management of peace and stability in Nigeria.
The symposium is a strategic move towards addressing the insecurity in Northern Nigeria, and the governors are expected to return with comprehensive solutions that will help to restore peace and stability in their respective states.
