Finidi George, a former winger, has been announced as the new head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The announcement was made on Monday, following the approval of the NFF Board and its Technical and Development Committee.

George, 52, previously played for Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis, and served as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months. Following Peseiro’s resignation, George stepped in as interim coach, leading the national team to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

During his interim period, George led the team in two friendly matches in Morocco, securing a 2-1 victory against Ghana and a 0-2 loss to Mali. George, a key player in the ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and made a memorable debut at the FIFA World Cup finals in the USA, has 62 caps for Nigeria. He also played in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals.

One of his most notable achievements was assisting Rashidi Yekini to score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in 1994. As a player, George has a collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 AFCON tournaments.
