Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his willingness to support Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, for the presidency in 2027123.

This comes amidst talks of a potential merger between opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku stated that he won’t hesitate to support Obi if the party decides to zone the ticket to the South-East of the country. He also mentioned that such meetings between opposition parties are healthy for Nigeria’s democracy.

He added that he had repeatedly said he wouldn’t contest if PDP zoned the ticket to the South or South-East specifically.

Atiku also confirmed that he and Obi had a meeting behind closed doors, fueling speculation about a potential coalition among opposition parties aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.

Regarding the merger talks, Atiku said, “We can merge to achieve a common goal. So, it’s possible and nothing can stop it if we so wish to achieve that.”

The former Vice President’s comments suggest a willingness to work with other opposition parties, particularly the Labour Party, to present a united front against the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.
