Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has ordered the arrest of dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero for allegedly creating tension in the state.

This directive was announced by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

“The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for creating tension in the state,” the statement read.

Bayero reportedly returned to Kano city last night in an attempt to reclaim his former position, two days after being deposed by the governor. Governor Yusuf, as the state’s Chief Security Officer, directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest Bayero immediately for disturbing public peace and attempting to undermine the state’s stability.

Bayero was dethroned on Thursday following the repeal of a 2019 emirate law by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled house. His arrival in Kano early Saturday was met with significant support, with a large crowd greeting him at Aminu Kano International Airport around 4:30 am. Supporters surrounded Bayero, chanting verses from the Quran and reciting Surah Al-Fatihah.

Despite his recent dethronement, Bayero’s return sparked widespread support among the people. His convoy moved towards the palace, indicating his intent to reclaim his position.

Bayero had replaced Sanusi in 2020 after Sanusi was ousted under the now-repealed 2019 law. Bayero was installed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje amid allegations of insubordination.
