President Bola Tinubu made his appearance at Eagle Square, the designated location for the Democracy Day celebration parade.
A video captured by NN News Media showed a moment of concern when Tinubu stumbled while getting into his car in preparation for the parade.
His wife, Remi Tinubu, was by his side, and they were escorted by the presidential motorcade.
The event officially began with the recitation of the national anthem. Among the attendees were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In his address to the nation following the 2024 Democracy Day, President Tinubu emphasized the purpose of the ongoing national reforms. He assured Nigerians that these measures are designed to strengthen the economy and not to inflict hardship.
Tinubu expressed empathy towards the citizens, acknowledging the economic challenges currently facing the nation. He stated, “The reforms have undoubtedly led to hardships. However, they are essential corrections needed to mend the economy in the long run, ensuring everyone has access to economic opportunities, fair wages, and just compensation for their efforts and labor.”
He further pledged his commitment to the people, promising to always listen to their concerns and never to abandon them. He highlighted the long-standing need for economic reform, citing the country’s over-dependence on oil revenues as a fundamental flaw.
As the nation celebrated the establishment of political democracy, Tinubu urged the citizens to also strive for economic democracy. He reiterated his understanding of the nation’s economic difficulties and reassured the people of his unwavering support.
