The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has issued a stern warning that the military will intervene if the nationwide #EndbadGovernance protests continue to escalate into violence.

General Musa’s warning comes in response to the widespread vandalism and looting that have marked the protests in several regions. On Thursday, protesters in Kano looted the newly constructed Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park and set parts of it ablaze. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) center, which was scheduled for commissioning next week, was severely damaged.

Addressing the press on Friday, General Musa urged protesters to recognize that such destructive actions are counterproductive and would only hinder national progress. He praised the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for their efforts to maintain order but emphasized that the military would be compelled to step in if the violence continues.

“We should realize that these destructions mean that funds meant for development will now be diverted to repairs,” said General Musa. “Instead of destroying, we should come together to ensure nothing is harmed. The statement has already been communicated to the local, state, and federal governments. We warn those who refuse to listen that we will not stand by and watch our country be destroyed. We will take professional action, and anyone caught will be prosecuted. Let’s avoid actions that bring chaos to our communities.”

He highlighted the extensive damage caused just the day before and warned of the dire consequences if such violence persists. “The armed forces and all military security agencies will not allow this to continue.”

In anticipation of potential unrest, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier indicated plans to involve the Armed Forces if the situation spiraled out of control. Speaking during a Zoom meeting with concerned Nigerians on Tuesday, Egbetokun stated that soldiers would monitor public demonstrations if there were sufficient indications of escalating violence reminiscent of the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

“For those threatening violence, many remain faceless. We have apprehended some instigators who have threatened to bomb public places and burn police stations. These individuals are currently in our custody,” Egbetokun explained.

He clarified the conditions under which the military would be deployed, stating, “The military will not provide security during these protests unless the situation becomes unmanageable. During the #EndSARS protests, the military only intervened after significant escalation, including the burning of five police stations in one day before a curfew was imposed by the Lagos government.”
