In a statement released on Sunday, Amnesty International called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of security agencies and the alleged involvement of hired thugs who reportedly disrupted protests and caused destruction.

The organization stressed the importance of the commission’s work being conducted publicly and receiving adequate resources to ensure a comprehensive inquiry. Amnesty International warned that failing to investigate these incidents, which occurred from August 1 to the present, by both state and non-state actors, would be a severe setback for the rule of law in Nigeria and would perpetuate the existing culture of impunity in the country.

Amnesty International Nigeria specifically urged the Governor of Kano state, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to immediately establish an independent judicial commission of inquiry. This commission should investigate the reckless killing of at least 10 hunger protesters at Kurna and Kofar Nasarawa, Kano, as well as the general conduct of security agencies and the disruptions and destruction caused by alleged hired thugs.

The organization also emphasized the need for protection for victims, their families, and potential witnesses from harassment, threats, ill-treatment, or reprisals, ensuring they can testify freely and without fear before the panel.
