The Nigerian federal government is engaging with the European Union to facilitate the extradition of Simon Ekpa, the leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), according to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations.

General Buba’s statement came in response to a social media post by Simon Ekpa, where he announced December 2, 2024, as the date for the presentation of the map of the “40 United States of Biafra” and the official declaration of the Biafra Republic.

Diplomatic and Military Response

General Buba indicated that while the military will continue operations against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the federal government will also utilize diplomatic channels to secure Ekpa’s extradition from Finland. “The FG would respond appropriately to the Finnish Government through the EU. On the part of the military, troops would sustain operations against IPOB / ESN,” he stated.

Biafra Declaration and Independence Efforts

Simon Ekpa, who claims to be the Prime Minister of BRGIE, announced the upcoming declaration via his official social media handle. He emphasized that the move is aimed at accelerating the realization of Biafra’s independence. Ekpa has been vocal about the planned declaration, which he believes will mark the beginning of a long battle for Biafra’s legitimacy and the delegitimization of Nigeria

The extradition efforts by the Nigerian government highlight the escalating tensions surrounding the Biafra independence movement and the international implications of Ekpa’s declarations.
