The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has called on residents of Sokoto to report any jobless individuals who are living a lavish lifestyle.
Speaking at the Sokoto State Governor’s office, Matawalle suggested that such individuals could be informants for suspected bandits disrupting peace in the state.
Matawalle, accompanied by the Chief of Defence, General Christopher Musa, was in Sokoto on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, with a mission to end banditry in the northern region of Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of residents continuing to support security agencies by providing timely and accurate information to assist the troops.
The minister said, “Like what we did while I was the governor of Zamfara State, let me call on the people of Sokoto State to always give information to the security agents. If you see someone who is not doing any work and such a person is changing cars, spending money lavishly, please do not hesitate to report such a person, as such a person is liable to be an informant to bandits.”
He further assured that the military has provided all necessary support to security agencies in Sokoto. Additionally, Matawalle revealed the recruitment of 200 individuals from each of the 23 local governments into the Sokoto Community Guard Corps to bolster the security team’s efforts.
“As you are aware, the issue of security is not for public consumption, so your Excellency, we are doing a lot. I am sure with your coming today, the people of the state will sleep with their two eyes closed, knowing that you are a man of your word,” Matawalle added.
