Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has voiced his profound frustration and sorrow over the worsening state of Nigeria’s road infrastructure.
Obi emphasized that the deteriorating road conditions are a stark reflection of how far the nation has fallen, with both its people and leadership seemingly indifferent to the problem.
Recounting his recent travel experience, Obi shared how his journey from Ekpoma to Benin, once a relatively quick trip, was severely prolonged due to the poor state of the roads. He described his experience on social media, highlighting how what used to be a two-hour journey now took significantly longer.
“On Saturday, I travelled for six and a half hours from Onitsha to Igarra, Akoko-Edo, to join our Labour Party governorship candidate for Edo State, Barrister Olumide Akpata, and continued our campaign through Jattu-Uzairue and Auchi,” Obi wrote on his X handle.
Obi lamented the extended travel time due to bad roads, noting, “Upon leaving Auchi around 6 PM, it took us an hour and a half to reach Ekpoma, where supporters had been waiting all day.”
The situation worsened further as the journey from Ekpoma to Benin, which should have taken only two hours, ended up taking three. Obi expressed his sadness over the conditions, stating, “I must express my sadness because the total journey used to take about 2 hours, but the poor road conditions made it much longer.”
The former governor also expressed deep concern over the numerous road accidents he encountered during his trip, describing how heartbreaking it was to witness such preventable tragedies. “We encountered over a dozen accidents along the way, and my heart kept bleeding, wondering how we have allowed ourselves to descend so low to a situation where we, the leaders, no longer care,” Obi concluded.
Obi’s remarks underscore the need for urgent action to address the country’s failing infrastructure and the impact it has on the lives of ordinary citizens.
