The ongoing chairmanship and councillorship elections in Enugu State have proceeded peacefully, yet voter turnout remains disappointingly low.
In preparation for the elections, the state police command imposed a movement restriction on Saturday, which residents largely adhered to.
At Ward 4 and Ward 5 in Enugu South Local Government Area, few voters arrived at polling stations as early as 8 AM. Accreditation began at 9 AM, followed by voting at 9:30 AM. Security personnel were present to ensure orderly conduct among voters.
Voter Christopher Nnamani expressed satisfaction with the peaceful environment but noted the lack of participation. “This number does not reflect the registered voters in this ward,” he stated, attributing the low turnout to economic challenges in Nigeria. He contrasted the current situation with the enthusiasm seen during the 2023 general elections, suggesting that the candidacy of Mr. Peter Obi had galvanized voters. “I advise voters not to lose hope,” he added.
Similarly, at Robinson Street Primary School in Ward 5, voter Okechukwu Ogbodo highlighted a general mistrust in the electoral system as a factor for apathy. “The electoral system in the country has prevented citizens from coming out to cast their vote during elections,” he said, urging the government and INEC to restore faith in the process.
Security chiefs were observed monitoring the elections at various locations to ensure smooth proceedings.
