The British High Commission in Nigeria has called on the judiciary to handle disputes stemming from Saturday’s Edo State governorship election with fairness and transparency.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the commission encouraged all parties with concerns about the election results to use the appropriate legal channels to address their grievances.
The statement described the election as largely peaceful and emphasized the importance of maintaining calm in the aftermath of the results.
“The UK calls for continued calm following the announcement of the result,” the commission stated.
It further stressed that electoral and legal mechanisms are in place to resolve any challenges or disputes, urging relevant authorities, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to address all concerns with openness and good faith.
The UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria and will closely monitor developments in Edo State.
In the election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, was declared the winner, having secured 291,667 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes.
