Nigeria is set to observe its 64th Independence Day celebration in a subdued manner, according to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Akume made the announcement during a World Press Conference held in Abuja on Thursday.
Serving as the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Akume revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved a “low-key” celebration in line with the nation’s current mood.
“In alignment with the mood of the nation, I wish to inform you that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved that the 64th Independence celebration be low-key,” Akume stated.
The SGF outlined the events scheduled to commemorate the occasion, starting with a Special Juma’at Prayer on Friday at the National Mosque in Abuja. This will be followed by an Inter-Denominational Church Service on Sunday at the National Christian Centre.
On Tuesday, October 1, the President will deliver a national broadcast at 7 a.m. Later that morning, a parade will take place at the Presidential Villa, marking the official 64th Independence Anniversary celebration.
Akume acknowledged that Nigeria is facing significant challenges but assured the public that the government is dedicated to building a prosperous nation for all, regardless of social or cultural differences.
“This administration remains committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to all citizens,” he said. “We are aware of the current economic conditions, largely driven by necessary policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidies. Nevertheless, the government is making efforts to mitigate the immediate impact while creating long-term opportunities through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He expressed optimism that Nigeria’s socio-economic development will soon take a positive turn under President Tinubu’s leadership.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, also called on Nigerians to recognize the progress made by the administration, such as improvements in national security, economic stability, and support programs for businesses and students.
“Whether it’s the growing success of our military against criminals, the consecutive drop in inflation, or the support provided through business grants and student loans, the signs of progress are there,” Idris said. “Together, we will build a nation that every black man on the planet can be proud of.”
The press conference was attended by several key officials, including the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and Senator Abubakar Bagudu.
