Nigerian economist and professor Pat Utomi believes the nation’s fortunes will change when people of character take leadership roles.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Utomi emphasized that Nigeria possesses the human capital necessary for greatness but lacks the values and strong institutions to realize its potential.
“Ultimately, values shape human progress,” Utomi remarked. “When individuals with integrity and a commitment to service occupy positions of authority, our country will turn around.”
He stressed that Nigeria’s decline in culture and values is tied to the collapse of key institutions, including the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to Utomi, no nation can thrive without reliable institutions that uphold the rule of law.
“Our judiciary is a laughing stock,” he stated. “No country can make real progress without a dependable judiciary. And look at INEC—it’s weak. Strong institutions are critical for human progress, and without them, we cannot hold people accountable.”
Utomi concluded with a message of optimism, saying, “We have the tools and the people to achieve this transformation. History has shown it’s possible, and I’m confident we can do it too.”
