Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed his deep sympathy for the Super Eagles following their unfortunate experience in Libya.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi condemned the neglect and abandonment the team and officials endured at a remote Libyan airport, ahead of their Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifier return leg match. The match was later delisted by CAF after the players refused to proceed.
Obi described the incident as regrettable, supporting the team’s decision to return home given the circumstances. He also praised the players for their patriotism, patience, and resilience in the face of such unfair treatment by the Libyan authorities.
While awaiting the outcome of the investigation ordered by CAF, Obi urged the Super Eagles to remain steadfast, not letting the unfortunate experience affect their morale. He encouraged the team to channel their frustration into determination, with a focus on qualifying for the AFCON and ultimately winning the championship.
In a broader message, Obi emphasized the unifying power of football, noting that victories by the Super Eagles can bring joy and pride to Nigerians during difficult times. He called on all Nigerians to strive for greater respect and dignity for the nation, expressing optimism that with the right leadership, “Nigeria will rise again” and a “new Nigeria is POssible.”
