Tensions have reached a boiling point in Enugu State following the alleged killing of Okezie Mba, a celebrated local musician known as “Igbo Jah,” reportedly shot by a police inspector on the evening of October 25, 2024.

The incident took place at the Enugu State Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad headquarters, igniting widespread protests demanding justice.

Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that Igbo Jah was leaving the anti-cult unit’s premises when he was fatally shot at approximately 8:10 p.m. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and the officer involved has since been detained for questioning.

Reports indicate that demonstrations quickly swelled as hundreds of residents gathered near the anti-cult unit’s headquarters, with some attempting to set the building on fire. Police forces managed to prevent damage to the facility but struggled to contain the protestors, who have since taken to major roads in the city, blocking streets and burning tires in a symbolic call for justice.

Authorities deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds, but the situation remains volatile as Enugu residents chant for accountability in the musician’s tragic death. The sight of smoldering tires and the sounds of protest underscore the community’s frustration, while many fear further escalations unless swift actions are taken.

Governor Peter Mbah expressed profound sadness at the incident, calling the shooting “unfortunate” in a statement issued Saturday. He extended his heartfelt condolences to Igbo Jah’s family and pledged that the investigation would be thorough, aiming to address the community’s calls for justice.
