The Nigeria Correctional Service in Imo State has reported that 1,383 inmates are now actively producing items like shoes, bags, soaps, and sandals, thanks to a comprehensive skill acquisition and empowerment program.
During a recent visit to the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, a delegation from the Correctional Service, led by the State Comptroller Eke C. Eke, acknowledged the ministry’s role in facilitating this initiative. The visit was intended to express gratitude toward Chioma Uzodimma, the First Lady of Imo State, for her support in providing resources such as skills training kits, foodstuffs, clothing, and other essential supplies to the inmates.
Commissioner Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu highlighted that the First Lady’s contributions through the ministry have been instrumental in advancing the reformation process for the inmates. Through various resources, including sewing machines and palliative supplies, inmates have been able to acquire skills and produce economic goods, aiding their journey toward rehabilitation.
According to the Comptroller, “Her Excellency has been the sole supporter of the inmates, enabling them to put these resources to productive use, which helps them in their reformation, rehabilitation, and empowerment.”
The empowerment program aims to not only aid the inmates during their time at the facility but also equip them with valuable skills that can help in reintegration into society post-incarceration.
