The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) issued a statement on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, giving the President Bola Tinubu administration a 48-hour deadline to release malnourished children and other protesters detained after a hunger protest.

SERAP condemned the detention as unjust, highlighting that these children should be in school rather than in detention.

The organization warned that if the administration fails to release the detainees, it will pursue legal action to ensure their freedom.

This statement comes amidst widespread outrage regarding the treatment of these minors, who were arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1 to 10.

Nigerians have condemned the government’s actions, highlighting reports of malnutrition and mistreatment among the detained youths.

Amnesty International and various civil rights organizations have called for their immediate release, arguing that charging minors with treason is a blatant violation of their rights.
