President Bola Tinubu has mandated the immediate release of minors detained for their involvement in hunger protests that took place nationwide from August 1 to 10, 2024.

This decision comes after the minors were held for 97 days, sparking significant public outrage.

The announcement was made by Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, during a briefing at the State House.

Idris stated, “The President has directed that all minors be released and reunited with their families anywhere they are in the country”.

He also indicated that a committee would be established to investigate the circumstances surrounding their arrest and detention, ensuring accountability for any law enforcement officials involved 14.

In addition to their release, Tinubu instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to prioritize the welfare of these minors and facilitate their reunification with their families 23.

The directive follows a public outcry regarding the treatment of the minors, who were charged with serious offenses such as treason during their arraignment on November 1.
