A 21-year-old resident of the Federal Capital Territory, David Ikechukwu, was reportedly shot by suspected police officers during an attempted extortion in Kubwa, a satellite area of Abuja.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday at the FO1 Sokale checkpoint in Kubwa, according to a report shared by the social media account AbujaGist on X (formerly Twitter). The account, reportedly managed by Ikechukwu’s sibling, described how he was stopped by five armed officers who accused him of cyber fraud, or “Yahoo Yahoo,” and demanded a bribe of N200,000.

Sensing danger, Ikechukwu attempted to flee, prompting the officers to open fire. According to the post, he was left in a ditch with a severely broken leg after the officers presumed he was dead and left the scene. “Thank God the bullet missed him, but he was left with a completely broken left leg and bleeding. Now he’s at the hospital fighting for his life,” the poster wrote.

In response, the FCT Police Command stated it is investigating the attack, initially described as involving “yet-to-be-identified gunmen” operating from a tricycle and dressed in blue and black uniforms. The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough inquiry to apprehend the suspects and uncover the facts surrounding the incident.

“The FCT Police Command assures the public that a dedicated team of detectives is actively investigating all aspects of the case,” the statement read. “This investigation aims to provide clarity and hold those involved accountable for their actions. We urge members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement efforts.”

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
