The Factional Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), with leadership across Europe and Africa, has distanced itself from the recent redeclaration of Biafra in Finland, describing it as an embarrassment, a disgrace, and a mockery of the sacrifices made by millions of Biafran heroes.
Speaking to NN News Media, BRGIE faction leader questioned the legitimacy of declaring Biafra in a foreign country, especially when those behind the declaration returned to their bases without making any efforts to establish operations in Finland.
Adding to the criticism, they highlighted that the Finnish government did not recognize the declaration, and Finnish authorities even denied the group access to visit BRGIE leader Simon Ekpa, who is currently imprisoned. Finnish police also restricted their right to protest, forcing them to move to a market area instead of allowing them to demonstrate in front of the police station.
Tensions within BRGIE have escalated, with internal conflicts emerging. The Chief of Staff, Ngozi Orabueze, has demanded financial accountability from Akpara Wasunny, one of the key figures in the organization. However, Wasunny responded by directing Orabueze to seek accountability from the imprisoned Prime Minister Ekpa, not from him.
In light of these divisions, The faction has called for an end to the sit-at-home orders and violence in the South-East region, urging for peace in the interest of the ongoing legal case against Simon Ekpa. With the possibility of a life sentence looming over Ekpa, the faction has expressed concerns about the implications of his trial. The Finnish legal system does not allow bail, and Ekpa, alongside four others, faces charges related to inciting violence and financing terrorism in connection with Biafran separatism. His trial is scheduled for May 2025.
