Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, issued a statement on December 23, 2024, expressing his concern over the latest directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) that places restrictions on the distribution of palliatives to the less privileged.

While acknowledging that the directive is a timely response to recent tragedies and the economic hardship, Obi warned that it is open to abuse and could discourage citizens from helping the hungry and distressed. He emphasized that acts of goodwill should not be hindered by excessive bureaucracy.

Obi argued that instead of requiring people to seek permission to assist those in need, efforts should be made to find better, more organized ways to offer help. The focus should be on promoting coordination, not imposing barriers that could deter much-needed acts of kindness during a time of widespread hunger, pain, and anger.

He stressed that this is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among the people. Instead, efforts should be channeled constructively to ensure that help reaches the most vulnerable safely and efficiently. Obi called on the government to address the root causes of hardship and provide lasting solutions rather than creating obstacles for those stepping in to fill the gaps left by insensitive policies.

Obi urged the IGP to review the directive and ensure that the police foster collaboration and support, not division and discouragement, in the shared quest to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
