Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, issued a statement following his visit to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha on Christmas Day.

In line with his tradition of celebrating with the distressed in society, Obi joined the Archbishop of Onitsha and Grand Patron of the Nigerian Correctional Centres to spend time with the inmates undergoing rehabilitation.

Obi expressed his admiration for the fully operational Skill Acquisition Centre at the facility, established through the intervention of Archbishop Okeke. He noted that inmates are being equipped with various productive skills and can now take their National Business and Technical Examinations Board examinations at the centre. Additionally, the National Open University of Nigeria has set up a study centre within the correctional facility.

As a strong advocate for human development through education, Obi commended the establishment of these educational facilities. He expressed his gratitude to Archbishop Valerian Okeke for his continuous support and significant contributions to the correctional facility and society at large.

Obi urged the government to replicate such positive developments across other correctional centres in the country. He emphasized that these initiatives would greatly aid in rehabilitating inmates, primarily youths, and prepare them to lead more positive lives and contribute productively to societal development.

“A New Nigeria Remains Possible,” Obi concluded.
