Mahdi Shehu, a well-known human rights activist and political commentator, took to his X account to express gratitude following his recent 12-day arrest and detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kaduna.

His arrest was due to the sharing of a video that alleged a plot by the French government to establish a terror hub in North-West Nigeria.

The controversy stems from statements made by Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, who in an interview disclosed that leaders of the Lakurawa terrorist group, upon their arrest, revealed a sinister agreement between ISWAP and the French government. This pact was purportedly signed on March 4, 2024, to set up a camp in Gaba village, Sokoto State, intended to serve as an operational base for terror activities across the Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi regions. President Tiani noted that Nigerian leaders were initially skeptical of this plot but emphasized Niger’s commitment to warning Nigeria due to their close relationship.

In his statement, Shehu acknowledged the diverse reactions to his situation:

He first thanked those who showed genuine concern, support, and prayers, crediting them for their prayers being effective.

He also expressed appreciation for those who celebrated his arrest, stating that their enthusiasm both emboldened him and enriched his perspective on life, likening them to fans cheering for a winning team in a stadium.

Lastly, he addressed those who were indifferent, describing them as a backdrop for conflict, suggesting that their neutrality might one day place them in unfortunate or pivotal roles.

Shehu apologized for not being able to reply to the over 4 million messages he received across social media platforms during his detention. He concluded by expressing his heartfelt thanks to everyone who engaged with his situation in any capacity.
