Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has commended the Nigeria Police for their swift and professional rescue of Mrs. Folashade Odumusu, the wife of retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Hakeem Odumusu.
The daring rescue operation, executed within a week of the kidnapping, showcases the effectiveness of a motivated and well-supported security force.
The operation not only ensured Mrs. Odumusu’s safe release without harm but also neutralized some of the kidnappers, recovered weapons, and retrieved the ransom. Obi praised the precision and professionalism displayed by the Ogun State Police Command, calling the outcome “commendable.”
Acknowledging the role of leadership, Obi noted the critical support provided by the Force Headquarters and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, whose direct involvement motivated the team and led to the dismantling of the criminal network.
“This success underscores a crucial point: with proper leadership, motivation, and adequate support, the fight against crime can yield impressive results,” Obi stated. He emphasized that this operation should serve as a model for handling rising cases of kidnapping and related crimes in Nigeria.
However, Obi also called on the police to extend the same level of urgency and commitment to cases involving everyday Nigerians, particularly those whose abductions go unnoticed or unreported. He stressed that many citizens remain in captivity without rescue efforts, a situation that requires immediate attention.
This success story, he remarked, is a testament to what is possible within Nigeria’s security architecture when it is properly managed and prioritised. Obi expressed hope that such achievements can pave the way for a safer and more secure nation, concluding with a resounding belief: “A new Nigeria is truly POssible.”
