An X user, identifying as Ogheneochuko (@calebfranklyn), has urged Yoruba leaders to exclude Delta and Edo states from their Sharia-related fight establishment in the Southwest with the Sultan of Sokoto.

Ogheneochuko stated, “I don’t support the Sultan, but I also don’t think you should have included Edo and Delta states in your description of the old Western region. The Western region once existed without both states. In fact, these two states formed their own region called the Midwest region.”

He further emphasized that the Sultan did not reference any part of the South-South or Niger Delta regions but specifically addressed the Southwest. “Such a topic wouldn’t even be debatable in Edo and Delta States. We stand in solidarity with you to defend your culture and way of life from intruders, but do not include us in the narrative. We are not a conquered people,” he added.

A coalition of Yoruba leaders under the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movement (AYDM) expressed their alarm over what they describe as the Sultan’s push for Sharia in the old Western Region, which they identified to include Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Kogi, and Kwara States.

However, Ogheneochuko rejected the coalition’s attempt to involve Delta and Edo in this Sharia issue. “Sharia is the issue, bro. Not separation from anyone. How did you turn this into something else?” he questioned.
