Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has unveiled a modernized fire-fighting unit equipped with state-of-the-art buildings, machinery, and emergency response tools.
This initiative is set to enhance the state’s ability to combat fire incidents effectively and reduce the vulnerability of residents to fire disasters.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Rivers State Fire Service Headquarters, located near Isaac Boro Park Flyover in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasized the administration’s commitment to delivering quality services to the people. He highlighted how past reliance on multinational companies for fire emergencies led to significant losses, including the devastating Mile One and Fruit Garden market fires.
“We lost critical infrastructure and lives due to inadequate fire services in the past. Today, we are taking a significant step towards ensuring timely and effective responses to fire outbreaks,” Governor Fubara stated.
The governor underscored his administration’s dedication to purposeful governance, focused on projects that positively impact citizens. He cited a recent tanker accident along Woji-Elelenwo Road, where the Rivers State Fire Service swiftly contained the situation, preventing casualties—an achievement that would have been unlikely in previous years.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to prioritize the safety and well-being of Rivers people, dismissing any attempts to undermine his efforts. “We are not concerned with detractors. Our mission is to serve Rivers people with tangible results, and this upgraded fire service facility is proof of that commitment.”
Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Samuel Anya, provided insights into the transformation, noting that this is the first significant upgrade to the fire service since its establishment in the 1960s. The remodeled facility now includes a gym, sick bay, offices, and cutting-edge firefighting equipment. Additionally, new fire trucks have been acquired, ending the state’s dependence on external agencies like the Federal Fire Service or oil companies for emergency response.
Port Harcourt City Local Government’s Head of Administration, Mr. Clifford Paul, lauded the governor for turning a once-dilapidated fire station into a modern, well-equipped emergency response center. He noted that the facility would significantly enhance personnel efficiency and preparedness.
Governor Fubara concluded by urging fire service personnel to maintain the equipment diligently and reassured Rivers residents that his administration remains committed to delivering essential infrastructure that improves lives and safeguards property.
