Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has spoken out about the unjust detention of a young Nigerian, Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been held in custody for over three months without trial.
Following his speech at a Commonwealth event in London, Obi learned about Quadri’s situation. According to Obi, the young man only made his first court appearance in March and remains in detention despite the prolonged delay.
Moved by the injustice, Obi has reached out to human rights lawyer Barrister Inibehe Effiong, who is already actively pursuing Quadri’s release.
In a heartfelt appeal, Obi urged the Nigerian Police and other state agencies to uphold the rule of law and cease the misuse of authority. He emphasized the need to protect and nurture Nigerian youth rather than weaponize the system against them.
“Our young people need our care and love to unleash their talents and energy toward building the new Nigeria we all dream of,” he said.
