Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has extended his condolences and support to the people of Niger State following the devastating floods that struck the Mokwa area.
In the company of Senator Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Mr. Obi traveled to Niger State to express solidarity with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the affected communities. Prior to his visit, while in the United Kingdom, he had already reached out to the Governor via a phone call to share his heartfelt sympathies.
Upon arrival in Niger State, Mr. Obi was warmly received by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency Yakubu Garba. During their discussions, the grim scale of the disaster was emphasized—over 200 lives lost, around 1,000 individuals still missing, more than 3,000 people displaced, and countless homes destroyed.
“This tragedy, like many others across Nigeria, affects us all,” Obi stated. “We must unite as one family to support each other during such times of grief and hardship.”
He made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government, emergency response agencies, and compassionate Nigerians to step in and alleviate the suffering of those affected.
Mr. Obi also commended the Niger State Government and local response teams for their resilience and efforts in the face of overwhelming challenges.
In a show of commitment, he announced an initial personal donation of ₦20 million to support relief efforts and pledged continued assistance.
He concluded his visit with a prayer: “May God comfort the bereaved families, protect the missing, and strengthen everyone affected. I pray for peace and restoration in Niger State.”
