Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has strongly criticized the Federal Government’s recent decision to significantly increase international passport fees.
The former Anambra State Governor accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of being out of touch with the everyday struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
Taking to his verified 𝕏 account, Obi described the fee hike as a clear example of misplaced priorities in the current government’s policies. “The obsession of this administration with placing burdens on the people is becoming legendary. It exposes a growing disconnect from the realities and hardships Nigerians face,” he stated.
Obi highlighted the sharp rise in passport costs within a short span, noting that the price now stands at ₦100,000 for a 32-page booklet and ₦200,000 for a 64-page passport. This marks the third increase in just two years, putting immense pressure on citizens who need international travel documents.
He further emphasized the disparity between these fees and the recently approved minimum wage. “In a country where the new minimum wage is ₦70,000, the cost of a single passport now exceeds what most workers earn in a month. This is likely unique to Nigeria,” Obi lamented.
Accusing the administration of deepening the difficulties faced by Nigerians, Obi added, “Instead of making life easier, this government continues to push the burden onto ordinary citizens. It is truly alarming that passport fees now surpass monthly earnings for many Nigerians.”
