The Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, has praised Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for what he described as remarkable achievements recorded within the first two years of his administration, noting that the impact of the reforms has attracted attention beyond Abia State and Nigeria.
Sanusi made the remarks on Thursday, December 25, at the 2025 Atani Day Celebration held at the Atani Community School Field in Arochukwu Local Government Area, where he joined Governor Otti, his longtime friend, at the event.
Commending the governor, the Emir said residents of Abia already feel the difference, but emphasized that the transformation under Otti’s leadership is also widely acknowledged internationally. He congratulated the governor and prayed for continued success, adding that he was proud to serve on Otti’s International Economic Advisory Council.
The Emir, who arrived in Abia on December 23, also applauded the cultural displays at the celebration and called on Nigerians to strengthen unity across ethnic and regional lines. He recalled his long-standing relationship with Governor Otti, which dates back to their banking careers at UBA and First Bank, and noted that this was his first time attending the Atani Day celebration.
Governor Otti, in his remarks, described the Emir as a close friend of over two decades and welcomed him warmly to the community. He cautioned against the politicisation of ethnicity and religion, stressing that such narratives often emerge when people lack meaningful arguments.
Reflecting on the Emir’s personal journey, Governor Otti praised his resilience in the face of past challenges, citing his tenure as Central Bank Governor and later experiences as Emir. He encouraged the people to remain steadfast during difficult times, assuring them that perseverance ultimately yields victory.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to delivering good governance in Abia, insisting that his administration remains focused on improving the lives of the people. He urged residents to be patient with inconveniences caused by ongoing infrastructure projects, assuring them that contractors have been directed to hasten completion.
Highlighting investments in key sectors, Governor Otti disclosed that his administration has consistently allocated between 15 and 20 percent of the state budget to healthcare and education. He cited the turnaround at Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, where outstanding salaries were cleared, lost accreditations restored, and facilities upgraded.
The governor reiterated that public education remains a priority for his government, noting that his own background in public schools shaped his success. He pledged continued focus on security, welfare, education, and healthcare.
The celebration featured colourful cultural dances and was attended by the Eze Aro of Arochukwu Kingdom, HRH Eze Eberechukwu Oji, prominent sons and daughters of Atani community, and dignitaries from across the state and beyond.
