The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Tanko Yunusa, has reaffirmed that the movement will remain within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and fully respect the outcome of the party’s presidential primary, regardless of who emerges as the candidate.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Yunusa emphasized that the Obidient Movement is deeply rooted in democratic values and will conduct its political engagements transparently within the ADC.
According to him, the movement—widely known for its support for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi—is prepared to contest fairly alongside other aspirants, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. While expressing confidence in Obi’s chances, Yunusa stressed that the movement would not abandon the party if the primary result goes otherwise.
“As democrats, we will contest equitably with every aspirant based on democratic principles. We strongly believe that Mr. Peter Obi will emerge victorious because of the massive support he is bringing into the ADC,” Yunusa said.
When asked what the movement’s position would be if Atiku Abubakar wins the primary, Yunusa responded, “We will remain in the party and give it the democratic support it deserves.”
Yunusa noted that the ADC began to gain nationwide momentum following Obi’s involvement, describing the party as a political “vehicle” that was energized by the former governor’s entry.
“With all due respect to the ADC, the party gained traction when people came together in agreement. The ADC vehicle was ignited with one spark, and that spark is the excitement Mr. Peter Obi has brought,” he said.
He added that the Obidient Movement is driven largely by young, educated Nigerians seeking accountability, clarity, and good governance, noting that millions of supporters are prepared to formally join the ADC.
“They have made their position very clear. They are moving in their millions into the ADC, and that is a clear affirmation,” he stated.
Yunusa also criticized the current administration, accusing it of deploying what he termed “negative executive power” against Nigerians. He urged citizens to respond through democratic participation, which he described as the people’s “positive executive power.”
Confirming recent political developments, Yunusa disclosed that several prominent political figures attended a gathering in Enugu where support was declared for the ADC. These included former governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and past principal officers of the National Assembly.
He specifically confirmed that Senator Victor Umeh, former National Chairman of APGA and current Senator representing Anambra South, has officially joined the ADC. Yunusa revealed that Umeh served as the Master of Ceremonies at the event and played a key role in affirming the collective decision of attendees.
“He stepped in as Master of Ceremonies and even moved the motion that was unanimously affirmed. That alone speaks volumes,” Yunusa said.
He further confirmed that Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has also defected to the ADC, adding that more political figures and supporters are expected to follow in the coming weeks as membership registration continues.
Yunusa concluded by stating that the Obidient Movement’s expanding local and international support base positions it as a major political force within the ADC ahead of future elections.
