Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the attack on the African Democratic Congress secretariat in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
He called the incident a serious setback for democracy.
Obi expressed concern that thugs can attack the office of a political party without fear of punishment. He said the event highlights how far democratic standards in the country have fallen.
The former Anambra State governor warned that the decline in leadership quality and tolerance of political misconduct could push the nation toward violence. He pointed out that allowing individuals with forged certificates to hold public office sends a troubling message to society. Obi stressed that fraud and violence cannot produce genuine leadership and that continued neglect of democratic principles will bring chaos affecting both current and future generations.
The comments followed the disruption of the planned opening of the ADC secretariat in Bakassi on Saturday. Reports indicate that suspected political thugs stormed the venue, scattering party supporters and destroying canopies, loudspeakers, chairs, and other equipment set up for the event.
Obi’s statement calls for urgent attention to the erosion of democratic standards and warns of the dangers of continuing down a path where violence and misconduct go unpunished.
