The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has denied reports claiming the party has already agreed to hand its 2027 presidential ticket to the South or entered into a political arrangement with former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The party said discussions on its presidential candidate are still ongoing and no final position has been reached.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, NDC Deputy National Spokesman Abdulmumin Abdulsalam said the party remains committed to broad consultations before making any major decision ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, the NDC has not zoned its presidential ticket to any region and reports suggesting otherwise are false.

He explained that politics is constantly changing and the party is still consulting widely with stakeholders across the country before deciding on its direction for the next election cycle.

Abdulsalam also revealed that the NDC is gaining strong attention from influential politicians across different political parties, including members of the ruling party.

He said several prominent figures such as former governors, ex ministers, serving lawmakers and former lawmakers are already showing interest in joining or working with the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The spokesman described the NDC as one of the most attractive political platforms in the country at the moment, saying many politicians now see the party as a major force ahead of the next general election.

Reacting to growing reports linking former President Jonathan to the party’s presidential ambition, Abdulsalam dismissed the claims as rumours circulating in political circles.

He stated that there is currently no official move by Jonathan to join the party and no agreement has been reached within the NDC leadership regarding his possible candidacy.

However, the party maintained that Jonathan remains eligible to contest for president under the Nigerian constitution if he decides to return to active politics.

Abdulsalam said every political option remains open, adding that Jonathan is qualified to contest on any platform of his choice, but stressed that the NDC has no existing pact or special arrangement with the former president.
